Let's Get Started

Welcome Class 72!

We will be using this blog to discuss various issues concerning technology in our lives.

You will be responsible for:

1. Writing one article about a technology issue, using any one of the four organizational patterns that we have learned about in class. Your article must contain your conclusions about this issue. You also need to ask either an inferential or evaluative question that your classmates may respond to. You will use the Post feature to add your article to the blog.

2. Responding to at least two of your classmate’s articles using the Better Answers format. You will use the Comment tab at the end of an article to respond to your classmates' questions.

Here is my article and my question that you may respond to. I have used the Problem/Solution organizational pattern.

As our world changes due to rapid advancements in technology, our students’ needs are also changing. Never before has there been a group of students who are able to access unbelievable amounts of information and mass media just by pushing a few buttons. With the technology skills that most students have, there is a great opportunity to use technology in teaching in order to make learning more interesting and interactive. However, sometimes using technology can cause big problems.

One of the problems that teachers encounter is not knowing all that much about technology. In teaching with it, they may find themselves in a situation where there is a good chance that students know more about the technology that is being used than they do. This requires a change in the traditional role of the teacher. It is a movement from expert to facilitator or leader, and a shift that may involve an uncomfortable loss of control. From my perspective, the solution is to be honest with students and tell them exactly what is going on. Also, there are many technology related inservices that teachers can attend to learn more.

Related to the issue of not being an expert, there is the issue of potential ‘landmines’ that may arise in the course of learning a new way of teaching. With the traditional way of teaching, most teachers figure out fairly quickly what catastrophic issues may arise. However, with something new, they never know exactly what may arise. One thing that I learned this morning was that even with the filters and blocks that we have on our system at school, it is possible to access blogs with inappropriate content. The solution that I put in place this morning was to tell students what was inappropriate content, and to provide the message that my expectation is that they would stay away from it at all times. I learned that I will have to deal with the ‘landmines’ as they arise.

Lastly, and perhaps the worst problem that teachers encounter using technology at school is the availability of it. Our server is so slow and dated that it often makes working with technology cumbersome. Another issue is the fact that there is not enough equipment. The computer lab at our school is used regularly, and it can be very difficult to book it on short notice. One way around this is to plan ahead. Another way is to allocate fundraising money toward improving technology in the school. We could work toward providing a traveling mini lab (laptops on a cart that could be booked out to classes) with wireless networking provided.

These are just a few of the problems that teachers may encounter upon trying to incorporate more technology into their programs. However, as technology has evolved, I don’t think that there is much choice, if we are to meet the needs of our students and keep them engaged in learning.

Question: If every student had a laptop and wireless internet access, do you think that student learning would increase? Why or why not?

I think that if kids the choice to use computers or laptops during class for teaching purposes the would pay more attention because they will have the same type of relaxation as if they had the same technology.

Adding on to that added it by accident as if they had the same type of technology as they probably have the same type at home so they will have a better understanding of the lesson.

If every student had wireless internet it can go in 2 directions. The good direction is that kids can get more freedom out of having laptops but the bad direction is: obesity, laziness and so on and so forth. There is always the safety issue as well like predetors. To put in a nutshell, I believe it is not the best idea.

I think if all students had wireless internet, it would increase learning, but in some cases it might not. It would help increase learning because it is alot esier to do assignments, and there is alot of good programs. I don't think will help because kids like to play games and they will not pay attention. it will also be a problem because younger kids may not know how to use the internet.I quess the idea of having a wirless internet is a good, but bad idea at the same time.

If every student had a wireless internet connedction with their laptops, i think that students would learn more because if they had to do an assignment they could start it there on the computer then take the computer home and do more there. If they complete there assignments early they have time to do more work for the other subjects. The only problem is predators, because they are everywhere but they would have to put the restrictions on so that students would'nt play during class.

I think both because the technology may make the kids listen more in class. They also might think that using technology isn't important so they might tune out, also their marks might slip as a result.

in my opinion i would say yes student may learn more stuff if they had a laptop and wireless internet, but some student's may not. They maynot do what they are suppose to do because some people when they are around computer's they just start playing games or stuff other that their task, but if they actually follow the rules everyone would be able to learn more facts.i mostly know my information from the internet, i really learn alot from the internet.Having wireless internet at school would definitaly increase the learning!

I think that having laptops is a good idea, but only for some kids. I think that others will choose to use the laptops for games, etc. On the other hand, this tool would be extremely helpful for some kids. If I had a laptop, I would definatly enjoy using it for school purposes.Overall, I think that the situation can go both ways.

I think if every student had a laptop with wireless Internet, it would good so writing and making graphs will be easier but could also be not good because kids will be using computers too much which leads to obesity and inactiveness. Also, some parents would not want their children using the computer for schoolwork.

I think that having laptops and internet access is a good idea because you would be able to look up and reasarch any information during class and school hours and you would be able to print, email and type out reports instead of having to handwrite them and worry about getting the project in on time if you could email it to your teacher right after your finished.

I don't know if having a laptop would be good for our learning because altho you would have acess to other resorces people would be distracted. At the same time you could learn diffrent things threw the internet.I thinkyou can learn most from books and maybe a little internet but I don't think it's a good idea to have acsess to the "computer" all the time at school.

I definately think that having internet access at your finger-tips would increase learning because the students would be able to look up any information at any time. Also for some students, it would be faster to type things rather than writing.

To add on to what I said before I actually forgot to answer the question!!!!! I personelly believe that kids will not achieve much due to all the different material located through out the internet!!!

If every kid had a laptop or a computer they would pay much more attention during class because it would make them want to learn more. They would want to learn more because it is fun and you can do way more things with them, example: teachers don't even have to talk you just send an email to everyone and the students would read it and then do whatever the teacher said on their laptop. students would definitely pay more attention!

It really matters what a person is like.If they are slackers, they will just play games. But if they work hard though,it will pay off.

I think that if every student had a laptop and a wirless internet connection, i think that it can be good and bad. The good being that we can see more information and search something if we do not know about something. It would make the writing assigments alot easier because you can also type faster and look up information very quickly. The bad being the students can lack off and not pay any attention at all to the lesson, by playing online games on the computer. There also might be child pretators looking for information about you. In my opinion i think it would be a good idea as long as you block out some sights and have security restrictions.

I think that if every kid had a wireless internet connection, it would increase their learning, and it could also be a bad thing too. The reasons for why it would be good are because they could complete their assingments quicker and it would be easier to complete the assignment. It could also make them become more lazy and obese, but it could also stop them from just doing the work themselves. So it could be either a bad thing or a good thing at the same time.

I think if everyone had laptops and wireless Internet, it may not work. Instead of doing work people may just be playing games, and will just quickly change the window so that they look like they are working when a teacher comes. Also, wireless internet is slow and easier to hack on. However, if everyone was responsible, laptops would be a great working tool.

I think that the student learning would be improved because the students might think that it would be really cool to use computers and laptops at school instead of paper and pens. students might also slack off because they might think that school would be easier with laptops and computers. overall there are positive and negative effect on everything including the use of laptops and computers during school.

if every student had a laptop and wireless internet connection i think it could be good but bad at the same time. it could be be bad because the kids might get distracted from class if the are watching something or playing a game on the laptop, one more distraction could be that if there is msn student would talk to each other instead of doing their work. also there might be child predators that might be able to get some personal information from kids using the laptops. it would be a good idea because it might be easier for some kids to type a report rather than write one with a pencil and paper, also it would be easy to organise and edit your ideas on the laptop. overall i think this would be a good i dea aslong as you add some site restrictions and security.

I think these internets are making boys and girls lazy and loose knowledge. So internet should be banned. Except something good for our knowledge, education, and google ^^. So I don't know what to answer about the internet.

(Its sad that boys and girls are getting deeper into internets.ㅠㅠ)
